The Berry phase was introduced by Michael Berry in the 80s, and a little later an elegant description in terms of holonomy was observed by Barry Simon. We introduce the Berry phase and the Berry-Simon connection, and then look at the Berry phase of an electron in a slowly-varying magnetic field, Rytov's law and the Pancharatnam phase.
