Ancient solutions of geometric flows such as Ricci flow and Mean curvature flow arise naturally as models for singularity formation. There has been significant progress towards the classification of such solutions under natural geometric assumptions. In this seminar I will survey some of these results for the Ricci flow as well as discuss a dimension reduction procedure for ancient solutions with optimal curvature growth. This leads to further classification results in higher dimensions.
