Welcome to the home page of the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Potsdam. We are one of eight institutes in the Faculty of Science. The Faculty is the largest of the six faculties at the University of Potsdam. We thank you for your interest in our institute, our research projects and collaborations.Learn more

Congratulations to our maths talents from Brandenburg

Congratulations to our maths talents from Brandenburg

The Institute of Mathematics would like to congratulate the pupils from Brandenburg who were successful in the national round of the Mathematical Olympiad in Flensburg. We would particularly like to congratulate the prize winners:

  •     2nd prize Ansgar Müller, Städtisches Gymnasium Carl Friedrich Gauß Frankfurt/Oder
  •     3rd prize for Jonathan Baumann, Evangelisches Gymnasium Hermannswerder Potsdam
  •     3rd prize for Luca Zucchelli, Weinberg-Gymnasium Kleinmachnow
  •     Recognition Dora Erdmann, Humboldt-Gymnasium Eichwalde
  •     Recognition Erik Cesca Fernandez, Voltaireschule Potsdam

We are delighted to support and encourage such talented young mathematicians. You can find more information about the event and the award winners on the BLiS e.V. website.

Math 4 Masters

On 26th June, we will host an event where Masters students will give mathematical talks for their fellow students and members of the institute. The details are given in the attachment. It will be a relaxed afternoon to hear some interesting mathematics and enjoy the time together.
Everyone in the institute is very warmly invited to join. If you have any questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Myfanwy Evans.

Girls and Maths – Gender, Performance, and Motivation in Focus

How does gender influence the performance and motivation of students in mathematics? Prof. Dr Martin Brunner and Dr Lena Keller from the University of Potsdam explore this question as part of the BIG-GENDER project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The project investigates, using data from international educational studies such as PISA, TIMSS, and PIRLS, how gender differences in school performance and motivation arise and how they relate to gender equality policies.

Interview with Prof. Melina Freitag

It is often said that you have to be passionate about science. Do publication pressure, conferences abroad, working after hours and a passion for the subject leave any room at all for a child? Many young scientists ask themselves this question. Melina Freitag is Vice Spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Centre "Data Assimilation" and mother of a few-month-old baby. For Mother's Day on 12 May, we asked the mathematician how she balances family and professorship. Read the interview here.

New to the Institute

We would like to welcome our new colleagues to the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Potsdam. The most important information about the first days at the institute can be found in our onboarding document.

I started a postdoc position in the Geometry group at the beginning of October and am excited about the opportunity to work with my new colleagues. In my dissertation in Bonn, which I completed earlier this year, I worked on a formula for Hadamard coefficients (the Lorentz equivalent of heat conduction coefficients).

My more general research interests are geometry (especially Lorentz geometry), global analysis, operator theory and mathematical physics. Following on from my dissertation, I plan to work on finding a Lorentzian equivalent of a spectral action, but am also happy to see joint research projects on other topics.
