Welcome to the home page of the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Potsdam. We are one of eight institutes in the Faculty of Science. The Faculty is the largest of the six faculties at the University of Potsdam. We thank you for your interest in our institute, our research projects and collaborations.Learn more

The study of Mathematics opens a variety of doors for a career in business, industry, education or science. The University of Potsdam offers students interested in Mathematics a diverse, research-oriented course of study with numerous links to research centers outside the university. Information for pupils and schools can be found here and further information on studying here.

There are currently 20 professors at the Institute of Mathematics in Potsdam. Their research groups represent a broad spectrum of current research directions in Mathematics. Members of the institute coordinate a Collaborative Research Center (SFB 1294) and are part of the steering committee of a Priority Program (SPP 2026) both financed by the German Research Foundation DFG. On 16 January 2026, the award ceremony for the Potsdam regional round of the Mathematics Olympiad took place in the main lecture hall of the University of Potsdam. Around 470 school pupils took part, with awards given for the best performances in two rounds. Accompanying short lectures from the Institute of Mathematics brought mathematics to life in all its diversity – from surprising card tricks to applications in geometry and cryptography.
The Institute of Mathematics congratulates all the prize winners and wishes the Potsdam team every success and all the best for the state round.
A detailed report on the event can be found on the University of Potsdam website.
The Collaborative Research Centre SFB 1294 ‘Data Assimilation – The Seamless Integration of Data and Models’, coordinated at the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Potsdam, has been successfully extended by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The third funding period will begin on 1 January 2026.
The SFB researches the mathematical foundations of data assimilation, i.e. the systematic integration of large, temporally structured data sets into evolutionary models.
With this extension, the DFG recognises the international visibility and scientific significance of the research network as well as its strong commitment to promoting young researchers.

The Institute of Mathematics congratulates Prof. Dr. Alexandra Carpentier on receiving a prestigious Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The grant is worth €1.97 million and will run for five years.
In her project ‘Statistical Optimality and Computational Efficiency: batch and sequential unsupervised learning under additional structure and sampling constraints’ (SOCE), Alexandra Carpentier investigates fundamental questions of unsupervised learning. The aim is to develop new mathematical methods and algorithms that combine statistical optimality and computational efficiency – especially under realistic structural and sampling constraints.
Are you interested in working with us? Current vacancies at the Institute of Mathematics and our partners can be found here.
For students who would like to work as research assistants (WHKs), we offer a special Moodle course (only with a university account). There you will find all relevant information and can apply directly.
We also recommend that you take a look at the job advertisements of the University of Potsdam, where numerous other exciting positions are advertised.
We look forward to receiving your application!
