The study of Mathematics opens a variety of doors for a career in business, industry, education or science. The University of Potsdam offers students interested in Mathematics a diverse, research-oriented course of study with numerous links to research centers outside the university. There are currently 20 professors at the Institute of Mathematics in Potsdam. Their research groups represent a broad spectrum of current research directions in Mathematics. Members of the institute coordinate a Collaborative Research Center (SFB 1294) and are part of the steering committee of a Priority Program (SPP 2026) both financed by the German Research Foundation DFG. The Institute of Mathematics congratulates Prof. Dr. Alexandra Carpentier on receiving a prestigious Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The grant is worth €1.97 million and will run for five years.
In her project ‘Statistical Optimality and Computational Efficiency: batch and sequential unsupervised learning under additional structure and sampling constraints’ (SOCE), Alexandra Carpentier investigates fundamental questions of unsupervised learning. The aim is to develop new mathematical methods and algorithms that combine statistical optimality and computational efficiency – especially under realistic structural and sampling constraints.

The Collaborative Research Centre SFB 1294 ‘Data Assimilation – The Seamless Integration of Data and Models’, coordinated at the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Potsdam, has been successfully extended by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The third funding period will begin on 1 January 2026.
The SFB researches the mathematical foundations of data assimilation, i.e. the systematic integration of large, temporally structured data sets into evolutionary models.
With this extension, the DFG recognises the international visibility and scientific significance of the research network as well as its strong commitment to promoting young researchers.
