Among integrable systems, the KP hierarchy and its cousins play a rather important role. Their solution spaces are algebraic varieties and have infinite dimensional symmetries. In this lecture, we shall show how the solution space of the KP hierarchy is related to an infinite dimensional Grassmann manifold by means of pseudodifferential operators. If time allows, we shall also study other KP type hierarchies.
