What is ... a Krylov subspace?

In 1979, Uffe Haagerup showed that in a free group the reduced norm can be bounded by a weighted norm of square summable sequences. Later in 1990 Jolissaint showed a similar estimate for the group of integers with the following interpretation: The reduced C*-algebra of the integers can be identified with the continuous functions on the torus via Fourier transform. Similiarly, one can identify rapidly decaying functions on Z with smooth functions on the torus. Hence in the case of the integers, the estimate by Jolissaint gives rise to a notion of smooth functions in the reduced C*-algebra of some groups. These groups satisfy the so called Property RD which we will introduce and study in the case of right-angled Coxeter groups and their Hecke algebras.
