The purpose of this work is to give a comprehensive overview about a generalized Fredholm index, the Mishchenko-Fomenko index, and its application to the theory of elliptic operators over a C*-algebra A. This will lead us to the Mishchenko-Fomenko index theorem which is a generalization of the famous Atiyah-Singer index theorem to pseudodifferential A-operators on Hilbert C*-modules over A.
