Recent papers by  Uhlenbeck and  Taubes have raised expectations that the field theory equations discussed by Kapustin and Witten in 2006 have a significance for  complex four-manifolds analogous to that of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations for Donaldson's theory of real four-manifolds. I will give an introduction to these equations, including some aspects intimately related to some earlier work of mine.
