Introductory event of the Institute for Master students

Dear students, we would like to invite you to the introductory event of the Institute of Mathematics for Master's students on Monday, 16 October at 4:15 pm in room 2.22 at the Institute of Mathematics (House 9, Golm Campus).

If you would like to participate in the course via Zoom, please enrol in the Moodle course Introduction to Master in Mathematics. There you will find the Zoom access data.

After the presentation of the study programme and other usual topics (mentoring or GL, FSR), the lectures and seminars offered for this winter semester will be presented by the working groups in the second part. Please make your participation possible - the lectures for Master Mathematics are cancelled on this day and at this time. The event should last about 1 hour in total.

If you have any questions about the Master of Mathematics after this event, please contact Prof. Carpentier.  You can reach Prof. Carpentier Tuesday 17 October between 10-12 in office 2.09.1.16 or by email by appointment.

Awards

Congratulations to Prof. Dr Alexandra Carpentier and Remo Ziemke!

Faculty awards for outstanding teaching

Prof. Dr. Alexandra Carpentier was honoured by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the suggestion of the Mathematics and Physics Student Council for her outstanding teaching in the course "Mathematics of Machine Learning".

Leopold von Buch Award for the best Bachelor's degree of the class of 2023

Remo Ziemke received the Leopold von Buch Prize, endowed with 300 euros, for his outstanding academic achievements and in particular for his Bachelor's thesis in which he transferred the results of a 2021 publication by Przemyslaw Górka on the separability of a metric space to more general spaces.

Research

Research and Contact Information

There are currently 15 professors at the Institute of Mathematics in Potsdam. Their research groups represent a broad spectrum of current research directions in Mathematics. Members of the institute coordinate a Collaborative Research Center (SFB 1294) and are part of the steering committee of a Priority Program (SPP 2026) both financed by the German Research Foundation DFG. New to the Institute

We would like to welcome our new colleagues to the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Potsdam. The most important information about the first days at the institute can be found in our onboarding document.

I am very happy about the extraordinary opportunity to fill the professorship for mathematical physics in the winter semester 23/24. In addition to the opportunity to teach and a fruitful collaboration with the colleagues of the institute, this offers me a wonderful framework for dealing with my research projects.

My research area lies in the fields of geometric and global analysis. I am interested in problems of (discrete) differential geometry and analysis of partial differential equations, which are partly motivated by questions of mathematical physics. More information can be found on my personal website.

Hello! I am Sanaz Pooya and joined the Institute of Mathematics as a postdoctoral researcher on April 1st. I have received my doctoral degree from Switzerland in 2018 and since then I have been working as a postdoctoral researcher at Stockholm University and the Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

My research concerns operator algebras and it interacts closely with geometric group theory and various (co)homology theories. Among others, I am interested in K-theory and K-homology computations for operator algebras arising from groups with geometric or combinatorial origin. More information about my research can be found on my personal webpage.

I am looking forward to taking up the professorship of algebra on 1 April, which I would like to orient broadly and actively shape with content from operator algebras, group theory and representation theory. For example, I have recently been interested in the ideal structure and K-theory of Hecke algebras and groupoid algebras, among other things. I plan to continue research on similar questions.

After my PhD at KU Leuven, and appointments at ENS Lyon, RIMS in Kyoto, WWU Münster, EPFLausanne, and since 2018 a professorship at Stockholm University, I am now very much looking forward to working with colleagues at our institute and university here in Potsdam. More information about my working group and me can be found on my personal website.

I am Ram Band, a visiting professor from the math faculty at the Technion, Israel. I find joy in thinking about spectral geometric questions on metric graphs, manifolds, discrete graphs (and more...) I am happy to be in the vicinity of the spectral graph theory group of Prof. Dr. Matthias Keller. These days I am mostly excited to work alongside my friend and colleague, Dr. Siegfried Beckus; We work on spectral problems concerning ergodic Schroedinger operators. Yannik Thomas, Lior Tenenbaum and Gilad Sofer are PhD students working with us in this period. More information may be found on my personal webpage.

Since September 2022, I hold the professorship for didactics of mathematics in an inclusive context / special focus on learning (secondary level I). I am very happy to be able to take on this new challenge.

After my teacher training at the University of Bielefeld, I first completed my traineeship at a comprehensive school in Mönchengladbach. Afterwards, I did my doctorate at the Technical University of Dortmund, specifically on the topic of percentage calculation for language education in mathematics lessons, and most recently I worked as a junior professor at the University of Cologne.

In addition to language education in mathematics teaching, my main research interests include diagnosis and support in (inclusive) mathematics teaching, problem solving and professionalisation research - especially in relation to further training in mathematics. The focus on in-service training also goes hand in hand with my involvement as a network partner in the German Centre for Teacher Education in Mathematics - as the Department of Subject-Related Knowledge Transfer of the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN). Further information on my research and teaching can be found on my website.
