Blood cells and their iconic discoid shape can modelled by closed surfaces minimizing an associated bending energy. I will give a brief introduction to immersed surfaces and discuss what kind of functionals we consider for bending energies. Additionally, I will sketch how to obtain a minimizer of the bending energy. This naturally leads to the interesting phenomenon of bubbling, which we can think of as budding of the cell.
