Open Position for a PhD candidate

I am announcing here one PhD position funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in the Project “Decoding Entanglement in Soft Materials". The position will work on the characterisation of tangled periodic structures on low-genus surfaces, with relevance to soft materials, like proteins, polymers or molecular chains. A key output of the project will be a publicly accessible database of periodic entangled structures.

The research of the group of Applied Geometry and Topology uses geometric and topological techniques in the study of soft and biological materials, both theoretically and computationally. The project will be interdisciplinary and combine various mathematical disciplines, such as low-dimensional topology, geometry and combinatorics all is a very applied setting, with significant computational work.

Applicants should have experience with either geometry, topology or knot theory, as well as experience with simulation and programming. Working knowledge of English is required. Some experience with database development would be an advantage.

            • Completed academic studies at an institute of higher learning
            • master degree in mathematics or a related discipline
            • highly motivated

The position is an E13 75%, starting on 1.4.2022 with funding for 3 years.

Applicants should send a CV and a letter of motivation addressing their suitability for the position, by 1.12.2021, by email to Prof. Dr. Myfanwy Evans, with the subject line, “PhD Position Application”
